Community Law is created by:
- treaties and conventions
- regulations
- directives
- decisions
Treaties & Conventions
- Member nations create new laws when they sign major treaties
and conventions.
- Treaty of Rome (1957)
- European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights (1950)
- Treaty of European Union (1992)
- Amsterdam Treaty (1997)
Regulations
- Regulations are issued by the Council of Ministers or the Commission.
- Regulations automatically become Community Law.
- All member nations must obey them.
Directives
- Directives are issued by the Council of Ministers or the Commission.
- They are binding on the member states.
- The exact details are left up to the individual governments
of the member states.
Decisions
- Decisions are issued by the Council of Ministers and are made
about specific matters and relate to specific people, companies,
etc.
- They are binding on those people.
